Protected Species Surveys

Protected Species Surveys

If there is potential for protected species to be affected by a proposed development, then planning policy dictates that an appropriate level of survey and a thorough impact assessment needs to be carried out to support the planning application.

Our ecologists are experienced in identifying situations where consideration needs to be given to an individual protected species, enabling us to conduct suitable survey, mitigation design and licensing.

We can offer the following surveys for individual protected species;

Wildscapes CIC bat in hand
The Wildscapes ecology team conducting a water vole survey
Woodhouse Washlands GCN bottle (3)
Bat roost aerial inspection

Case Study – SCC Bat Roost Surveys

In 2021/22 Wildscapes CIC were commissioned by Sheffield City Council to carry out bat roost surveys on 350+ houses ahead of planned insulation works as part of the social housing stock improvement programme.

Following a set of preliminary roost assessment visits, a mix of both dusk and dawn nocturnal surveys were undertaken to determine the presence of roosting bats at these properties.

Over the course of the survey season we were able to identify and confirm the presence of 19 roosting sites, and a further 10 probable roosting sites meriting attention during the construction phase of the improvement programme. The roosting bats were identified as Common and Soprano Pipistrelles, although other species including Common Noctules and Daubentons Myotis were observed during the surveys, consistent with the adjacent environments.
