Biodiversity Net Gain and Offsetting

Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain is an approach to development that leaves biodiversity in a better state than before. If a development is likely to have an impact on biodiversity, developers are encouraged to provide an increase in appropriate natural habitat and ecological features to compensate for those lost through development.

The team at Wildscapes have developed the BNG Hub, a comprehensive resource to guide you through the entire, end-to-end BNG process.  From explaining the complexities of the BNG regulations, to conducting baseline BNG assessments, and providing and delivering BNG offset units, the BNG Hub is here to ensure your development projects align with nature.

What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?

Biodiversity Net Gain is an approach to development that leaves biodiversity in a measurably better state than before. It enables developments to positively contribute to the recovery of nature, as it aims to create new habitat, enhance existing habitats, and to reduce and compensate the impact of developments on natural habitats in the UK.

Mandatory BNG came into place in February 2024, meaning all planning permissions granted in England (with a few exemptions) are now required to deliver at least 10% BNG.  This means that developers have to measure and quantify their impact on biodiversity as part of their planning application, and will have to produce a plan to ensure that at least 10% more of the biodiversity (species and habitats) that they are going to negatively impact by the development are created, either onsite or elsewhere.

What can Wildscapes and the BNG Hub offer?

If your development requires planning permission then the introduction on mandatory biodiversity net gain WILL have an impact on your project. We provide a complete end to end service including;

  • BNG Advisory Service
  • BNG Assessment
  • BNG Plans
  • Implementation & Monitoring
  • Offsite BNG & Biodiversity Units

We are committed to spearheading the transformation of biodiversity net gain (BNG) in the realm of development projects. The team boasts a wealth of knowledge in ecological conservation, land management, and sustainable development. With over two decades of collective expertise, we are well-equipped to guide you through the intricacies of BNG regulations, assessments, and implementation.  Find out more about the BNG Hub team and offering here.
